Co-ordinator:  Sarah Hawkes

Sarah Hawkes is the Athena SWAN Charter Coordinator

Before joining Athena SWAN, Sarah worked as project coordinator of the Women’s Advancement Initiative at King’s College London, researching and coordinating the development of a number of interrelated projects to support the career progression of female academics. Prior to this, Sarah joined the Graduate Research Executive scheme at Ipsos MORI where she carried out qualitative and quantitative research in a range of public policy areas, advertising, gaming licenses and intellectual property.

Sarah studied LLB Law and Sociology at Cardiff University and holds an MSc in Political Sociology from the London School of Economics, where her thesis entitled “Women’s Place in Male Space (Ross 2002). In what ways does the media representation of female politicians influence their political fortunes?” aimed to show that as part of the dominant culture in all societies, the news media performed the function of shaping and perpetuating dominant norms and values, which consequently reinforced traditional gender roles whilst simultaneously limiting the political opportunities for women.

Sarah is currently undertaking an MPhil/PhD with the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, looking at the impact formal mentoring for female academics has on the gender gap in senior academia in medicine and biomedical sciences.

Outside of work and study, Sarah is currently volunteering with a not-for-profit theatre company (Standing on the Shoulders of Giants) helping diverse community groups to engage creatively and artistically with the classics. Giants has a track record of working with diverse ‘invisible’ communities employing its original methodology, giving them a voice, and enhancing their participation in society.
