Joining the charter

The first step for a university to become a Charter member is to make a commitment, at senior management level, to the Charter principles.  The Vice Chancellor, or a senior university officer, should write to the Charter Coordinator acknowledging the University’s acceptance of the Charter Principles.   The letter (hard copy on University letterhead) must be signed by a member of staff who has authority to enter into agreements on behalf of the University.

The letter should include the details of a single designated Charter contact within the University to be responsible for ensuring that the University promotes and implements the Charter Principles.   The contact should be someone at working level who is knowledgeable about women and science.  This may be someone from HR, but is more likely to be a female scientist or member of a Women in Science network.

There is no charge for membership and no forms to complete, but universities are expected to apply for a recognition award within 2 years of joining the Charter.

Application letters should be addressed to               Sarah Hawkes
